Woodworm Treatment Guarantees
Terms vary, so read them before you agree. Here are the questions worth asking.
What to ask about a treatment guarantee
Many firms offer a written guarantee with woodworm treatment. Terms differ widely, so read them before you agree. We do not offer a guarantee ourselves, because the specialist who does the work issues it.
A guarantee is only as good as its wording and the firm behind it. Ask who stands behind the promise if the firm stops trading. Ask too whether an insurer backs it, because that decides whether the promise survives a closure. Get every answer in writing, and keep the paperwork with your property papers. Our guide to checking a firm's reviews explains what to look at before you hire.
Questions worth asking
What does it cover?
Most cover re-infestation of the treated timber only. Untreated areas and new timber are usually left out.
How long does it last?
Terms vary from a few years to several decades. A longer term is only useful if the firm is likely to exist.
What voids it?
Many ask you to keep the building dry and ventilated. Leaks or new damp may void the cover.
Can it transfer?
A buyer may want to rely on it. Check whether the guarantee passes to a new owner and what that costs.
If beetle returns
Keep the quote, the invoice and any treatment record, because the firm will ask for them. If you see fresh holes or dust in treated timber, contact the firm in writing and keep a copy. Ask for a visit and a written reply.
Guarantees: your questions
Do you offer a guarantee?
No. We publish advice and pass requests to local specialists. Any guarantee comes from the firm that carries out the work, and you should get it in writing.
Is a guarantee needed for a sale?
Buyers and lenders may ask for a treatment record. A guarantee can help, but a clear survey report matters too. See the buyer guide.
Get rid of woodworm — for good
Book a survey to find out whether the beetle is still active. Then you can decide what treatment, if any, you need.
