How to judge a woodworm firm before you hire
Reviews are one of the best clues to how a firm works. However, a star rating on its own tells you little. Use the four steps below on every firm you are thinking of hiring.
Read independent reviews
Look at review sites the firm does not control. Read the middling and poor ratings as well as the best ones.
Ask for recent references
Ask for two or three recent jobs like yours. Then contact the customers, if they agree.
Compare written quotes
Get at least two quotes in writing. Check they cover the same timbers, the same method and the same paperwork.
Check the paperwork
Ask what you receive after treatment. A clear record helps if you sell the property later.
Red flags in a quote or a sales visit
None of these proves a firm is poor. However, each one is a reason to slow down. Ask for more detail in writing, and compare the answers with a second firm.
- Pressure to sign on the day, or a price that falls sharply if you agree now.
- Treatment of the whole house recommended without a survey or any explanation.
- No mention of the cause, such as damp or poor ventilation, that let the beetle in.
- A guarantee that is vague about what it covers, who backs it and for how long.
